Deno Sandbox is one of the most interesting new products in the agent infrastructure market because it is not pretending a code runner is enough. It gives developers Linux microVMs, an SDK, shell execution, files, SSH, HTTP exposure, volumes, snapshots, network policy, secret protection, and a direct path from sandboxed code to Deno Deploy.
That is a strong pitch for Deno teams. If your product already runs on Deno Deploy and your workload is "run this generated TypeScript safely, inspect the result, and either discard it or deploy it," Deno Sandbox is a natural fit.
But "Deno sandbox" can mean two different things.
One meaning is a bounded, secure execution environment for untrusted Deno code. Deno Sandbox is built for that. The other meaning is a full workspace for a Deno coding agent, app builder, eval harness, or long-running assistant. That workload needs more than a fast microVM. It needs a real computer that can keep terminals alive, run services, expose ports, accept SSH, fork from a running decision point, and stay available for as long as the product needs.
For that second meaning, Freestyle VMs are the better runtime for serious Deno agents. Freestyle VMs are the most powerful VMs for AI agents: they are hardware virtualized, they run real Linux, and they can run forever when configured to stay running.
Deno Sandbox is Deno Deploy-native
Deno's own docs describe Deno Sandbox as instant Linux microVMs on Deno Deploy. Each sandbox is API-driven through @deno/sandbox, can run real workloads with files and processes, supports strict network egress policy, and can be torn down when the work is done.
The most compelling part is the Deno Deploy integration. Deno's launch post says generated code can be run in a sandbox and then deployed directly to Deno Deploy with sandbox.deploy(). The docs also frame Sandbox and Deploy as one workflow: create code, prove it safe in a sandbox, and hand it off to Deno Deploy without adding a separate orchestration layer.
That matters. Many sandbox products can execute code. Fewer are attached to the deployment platform where that code will run.
Deno Sandbox is especially strong when:
- the code is JavaScript or TypeScript
- the production target is Deno Deploy
- the task is short-lived or intentionally bounded
- untrusted code needs network and secret controls
- the product needs fast boot instead of a long-lived workspace
- the sandbox should disappear when the session ends
Deno also has a good security story for generated code. The launch post describes secrets that are represented as placeholders inside the sandbox and materialize only for approved outbound hosts. It also describes network egress controls at the VM boundary, which pair well with Deno's own runtime-level --allow-* permissions.
That combination is useful for AI systems that run generated code with real API keys. If the agent is supposed to call api.openai.com but not exfiltrate credentials elsewhere, a sandbox-level allowlist is the right kind of primitive.
The limit is the product shape
Deno Sandbox is intentionally ephemeral. The timeouts docs say sandboxes live for the duration of the script by default. You can provide a duration, reconnect later, extend the timeout, or promote the sandbox to a Deno Deploy app for longer-running needs.
That is a reasonable design. It keeps costs predictable, reduces forgotten infrastructure, and fits the "execute, inspect, deploy or discard" loop.
It is also the point where heavy agent products start to diverge.
A serious Deno coding agent is not only running one script. It may install dependencies, clone a project, run deno task dev, start a database or local service, watch test output, keep a REPL open, expose a preview, debug permissions, tail logs, and then wait for a user to return tomorrow. The runtime is no longer a short execution cell. It is the workspace.
Deno Sandbox has knobs for this. Its docs mention durable volumes, snapshots, SSH, HTTP exposure, and duration-based reconnect. But the center of gravity is still bounded sandbox execution. The documented limits page lists 2 vCPU, 768 MB to 4096 MB memory, 10 GB ephemeral disk, and a default concurrency limit during the pre-release phase. Those are good limits for fast, safe compute. They are not the same as giving a Deno agent a large, durable Linux machine it can inhabit.
Freestyle starts from that machine model. The Freestyle VM docs describe full Linux virtual machines for long-running, complex tasks. VMs start with 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, and a 20 GB root filesystem by default, and can be resized after creation for larger workloads. They can stop when idle, start again by API calls, SSH, or network activity, and be run without an idle timeout when the workload should stay alive.
That difference matters when Deno is not just the language runtime. It is the application environment.
Deno agents need terminals, not just commands
Most Deno sandbox comparisons focus on whether the platform can run deno run. That is the easy part.
The harder question is whether the platform can preserve the interactive context around the run. A Deno agent may start a Fresh app, run tests in watch mode, open a debugger, answer an interactive prompt, inspect deno info, change permissions, and keep the terminal output around for a user or support engineer.
Freestyle's PTY docs make terminals first-class. A PTY session is a long-lived interactive shell inside the VM. It can be opened, detached, reattached over WebSocket, and listed later. It survives client disconnects, VM suspends, and VM forks. It is backed by a real PTY, so line editing, job control, prompts, REPLs, package managers, and terminal UIs behave like normal Linux.
That is a different product surface than a command API. It means the agent can leave deno task dev running, the browser client can disconnect, and the product can reconnect to the same terminal instead of reconstructing context from completed command output.
For short generated-code runs, that distinction may not matter. For coding agents, it becomes the difference between a sandbox that can execute Deno and a workspace where Deno development can actually happen.
Services and previews are part of the Deno loop
Deno is not only used for scripts. It is used for servers.
Deno Sandbox can expose HTTP services, and that is a real advantage for preview flows. The Deno Deploy connection is also excellent when the end state is a production deployment on Deno's platform.
Freestyle is better when the preview is one part of a larger machine. The Freestyle docs show how to build a reusable Deno snapshot, boot a VM from it, write a Deno.serve app, run it under systemd, and map a public domain to the VM port. VM domains let a product route HTTPS traffic to services running inside the VM, and Freestyle's docs also describe zero-setup *.style.dev preview domains for testing and demos.
That lets a Deno agent run the app, the logs, the terminal, the test runner, and supporting services inside one Linux environment. The preview is not a detached artifact. It is a service on the same machine the agent is editing and debugging.
This is especially useful for app builders. A user does not want a code execution transcript. They want a live app. They want to see the running Deno service, ask for changes, inspect the result, and return later without the platform throwing away the runtime context.
Snapshots are useful, but live forks are different
Deno Sandbox has volumes and snapshots. The volumes and snapshots docs describe read-write block storage for caches, databases, and artifacts, plus read-only snapshots for preinstalling software so sandboxes can boot quickly with the right toolchain.
That is a good model for setup caching. Install dependencies once, snapshot the image, and start future sandboxes from a known base.
Freestyle supports the same broad pattern for Deno. The Freestyle Deno guide creates a builder VM, installs Deno into /opt/deno, snapshots it, then boots reusable VMs from that snapshot to run snippets or long-lived HTTP servers.
The bigger difference is what happens after setup.
Agent products often need to fork at the moment of uncertainty, not only at the clean beginning. The agent has installed packages, started the server, reproduced a failing request, opened a terminal, and reached a decision point. One branch should try a dependency upgrade. Another should rewrite a handler. A third should change a permission model. Each branch should inherit the running context that made the decision meaningful.
The Freestyle lifecycle docs expose forking as a VM state transition. Forking creates a new VM from the current running state so an agent can explore multiple paths from the same environment. The PTY docs add the key terminal detail: non-exited PTY sessions are inherited by forks under the same session ID and diverge independently in each child.
When the agent is editing source code, keep that source state in Freestyle Git or another reviewable Git system. Git should hold branches, commits, diffs, and review. The VM should hold the live Deno runtime: processes, terminals, caches, previews, logs, and machine state.
Deno Sandbox vs Freestyle for Deno
The fair comparison is not "which one runs Deno?" Both can.
Choose Deno Sandbox when you want Deno Deploy-native, fast, bounded execution for untrusted JavaScript or TypeScript. It is strongest when the sandbox is part of a Deno Deploy workflow: run generated code, control egress and secrets, inspect output, expose an HTTP preview, persist small pieces through volumes, snapshot a prepared root, and deploy the result to Deno Deploy.
Choose Freestyle when Deno is the runtime inside a larger agent workspace. That includes AI coding agents, app builders, hosted development environments, QA agents, eval rigs, internal automation, and long-running assistants that need to keep a Deno project alive beyond one sandbox session.

The bottom line
Deno Sandbox is a strong product, especially for teams already building on Deno Deploy. It gives Deno developers a fast, secure, deployment-adjacent sandbox for generated code, untrusted workloads, preview environments, and short-lived agent tasks.
But the best sandbox for serious Deno coding agents is not only a Deno execution cell. It is a real Linux machine.
If your Deno workload is bounded, security-sensitive, and headed directly to Deno Deploy, Deno Sandbox should be on your shortlist. If your product needs a heavy Deno agent that installs software, runs services, keeps terminals alive, exposes previews, accepts SSH, forks live workspaces, and keeps going across user sessions, use Freestyle VMs. For heavy use cases with serious coding agents, Freestyle VMs are better for Deno than Deno sandboxes.
